Virus infections often have unpredictable results: one of them is the ability to take control of your system. A virus can use your computer to host denial of service and other attacks, and it can do just about anything else that is programmatically possible. The bottom line is that when controlled by a virus, your computer can perform any function that is executable through software, including shutdown.
